The Haunting of Tulloch Castle

(Morgan) We’re packing up today and heading to the Isle of Skye - so here’s a bit of history on where we stayed in Inverness!

Inverness is the capital of the Highlands of Scotland. Historically, Inverness is best known for the Battle of Culloden where the Jacobite army was defeated by the British in 1746, essentially ending the Jacobite uprising with Bonnie Prince Charles for Scottish independence. Shakespeare’s MacBeth also takes place in Inverness.

We stayed at Tulloch Castle, in Dingwall (25 mins outside Inverness). It is believed that Norsemen may have built Tulloch Castle in the 12th. However, the first recorded ownership of the castle can be traced to the Bayne family in the 16th century, before the castle was inherited by the Davidson family, for which Tulloch Castle is known as the legendary birthplace of Clan Davidson.

During WW2, Tulloch Castle was used as a hospital after the evacuation of Dunkirk. It went through a series of renovations in the 1970s as a hostel for local students before eventually becoming a hotel and conference center.

But my favorite part? The supposed haunting of course! The “Green Lady.” Duncan Davidson, the 4th laird of Tulloch (who become MP of Cromarty in 1826) was quite the philanderer.  Also nicknamed the “The Stag”, the laird had five wives who jointly gave birth to eighteen children and he is reported to have had over thirty illegitimate children. One of his daughters, Elizabeth, met an untimely and tragic death when, finding her father with a serving girl, she fell headlong down the stone stairs, breaking every bone in her body and is since known as The Green Lady of Tulloch.

We  spotted any ghosts but we’ve certainly been haunting the Green Lady bar.

See you in Skye!

P.s.
Upon checkout, the front desk lady informed me that our room (8) is one of the haunted rooms. That people who stay in 8 and 15 claim to hear and see weird things. Our toilet was slow to flush so I guess there is that!
